Abstract

1,163,673. Inking apparatus. STABILAG ENG. Ltd. 26 April, 1968 [5 May, 1967], No. 20938/67. Heading B6C. [Also in Division B2] An applicator device for liquids such as printing ink comprises a housing, a roller with a portion of its curved surface protruding from the housing and another portion in a chamber extending in the housing from an inlet to an outlet, and a pair of positive displacement pumps respectively for supplying liquid to and removing it from the chamber. A pair of bodies 2, 3, secured together by bolts 4, are formed in their abutting faces with circular recesses providing a housing 8 for an applicator wheel 7 mounted on a driving shaft 16 journalled in the bodies 2, 3. Part of wheel 7 projects outwardly from housing 8 and part projects inwardly into a semi-annular chamber 9 provided by an enlargement of housing 8. A groove 11 in body 3 connects one end of chamber 9 with a hole 13 through body 3, and a groove 12 in body 2 connects the other end of chamber 9 with a hole 14 through body 2. Circular recesses in bodies 2, 3 provide a chamber 20 communicating with chamber 8 and housing a circular disc 19 mounted eccentrically on a spindle 21, rotation of which thereby serves to vary the distance between disc 19 and wheel 7. Grooves 29 in the bodies 2, 3 provide a passage interconnecting chamber 20 and groove 11. A pump 15, mounted on shaft 16, draws liquid from a line and delivers it via a spring-loaded non-return valve and via hole 13 and groove 11 to chamber 9. Some of the liquid is carried by wheel 8 for application to the work, the coating thickness being determined by the angular setting of disc 19. Excess liquid is drawn from chamber 9, via groove 12 and hole 14, by a pump 18 mounted on shaft 16, and is returned via a spring-loaded non-return valve to the line. At the re-entrant side of wheel 7, housing 8 provides a converging gap 30 to prevent sudden increase of liquid pressure thereat. It is stated that the pair of pumps may be provided by three gear-wheels of which the central wheel co-operates with each of the outer wheels to define two gear pumps. A plurality of applicators may be used in parallel.
