Abstract
1,162,810. Textile treating compositions. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. 31 May, 1968 [31 May, 1967], No. 26241/68. Heading C5D. [Also in Division D1] A textile treating composition comprises:- (i) from 0À01 to 99% of a water-dispersible reaction product of a primary alkyl amine having an aliphatic chain of from 12 to 30 carbon atoms and of from 1À25 to 2 moles of epichlorohydrin, per mole of amine; (ii) from 0À0005 to 95% of an additive which is (A) borax, (B) anionic detergent, (C) urea or (D) mixtures thereof; (iii) from 0-10% of (i), of an emulsifier which is the condensation product of one made of a fatty alcohol of from 9 to 18 carbon atoms and 10 to 60 moles of ethylene oxide or is the condensation product of one mole of an alkyl phenol having from 9 to 15 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and from 10 to 15 moles of ethylene oxide; (iv) from 0 to 20% of a highly alkaline material; (v) from 0 to 20% of organic solvent; (vi) from 0-10% of inert organic salt; (vii) the balance, if any, substantially water. The preferred reaction products (i) are those prepared by reacting the primary amine and epichlorohydrin at 80 to 200 F. for 30 minutes to 10 hours and neutralizing the product at a temperature of 60 to 150 F., to an acid value of less than 30. Specified amines used in the above reaction are dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl, pentapropylene, hexapropylene, dodecylcyclohexyl, eicosyl and docosyl amines. Most suitably the additive (ii) is a mixture of urea and borax, a mixture of urea and anionic detergent or a mixture of urea, anionic detergent and borax. The product (i) is preferably present in amounts of 0À05 to 5%, 29-250% of borax, 25-250 mole per cent of anionic detergent and 1300 to 3000% of urea may be present. The anionic detergent may be a soap or a water-soluble salt of an organic sulphuric acid reaction product containing an alkyl radical having 8-22 carbon atoms and a sulphonic acid, or sulphuric acid ester, radical. For example, alkyl sulphates, alkyl benzene sulphonates, alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates, sulphonated α-olefins, fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates and sulphonates, ethoxylated alkyl sulphates, fatty acid isothionates, or fatty acid amides of a methyl taurine may be used. The highly alkaline catalysts normally used include alkali metal hydroxides and carbonates, and ammonium hydroxide. The inert inorganic salt is suitably sodium chloride and exemplified organic solvents are ethanol and isopropanol.
