Abstract

1,162,212. Electrolytically purifying sewage. CONSTRUCTORS JOHN BROWN Ltd. and D, H. SMITH. April 25, 1967 [April 25, 19661, No. 18056/66. Heading C7B. Sewage is purified by electrolyzing it mixed with a halide ion containing electrolyte such as sea water, or electrolyzing the electrolyte alone and subsequently adding the electrolyzed electrolyte, e.g. containing free Cl 2 , O 2 and hypochlorite, to the sewage, in an electrolytic cell having in a vertical arrangement at least one Ni or ferrous alloy e.g. mild steel cathode plate 26 and at least on Pt, Ti, platinized Ti, PbO 2 electrocoated graphite, or magnetite anode plate 4. As shown, the electrodes are spaced apart in parallel relationship by gaskets or spacers 35 e. g. of plasticized PVC, and rigid insulating backing plates 1, 2, e.g. of PVC, resin-bonded glass fibre or nylon coated Al alloy castings, disposed on remote sides of the electrodes are tied together by insulated tie bars (11, 12, Fig. 2, not shown). Inlet and outlet pipes 28, 31 and 29, 32 communicate with the space between the elctrodes, e.g. through perforated holes in the cathode (as shown) and at least one hole 33, 34 in the anode or vice versa, whereby electrolyte can be supplied to and removed from the space. Where the electrolyte is sea water, build-up of Mg(OH) 2 between the electrodes may be prevented by a high rate of flow of electrolyte or using a diaphragm 27, e. g. of asbestos or (Registered Trade Mark) "Terylene" or PVC fibre cloth, to divide the space into cathode and anode compartments.
