Abstract
1409419 Electrolytically rendering a polluting substance innocuous DART INDUSTRIES Inc 18 Sept 1972 43207/72 Heading C7B A polluting substance (such as CN<SP>-</SP>, CRO 3, NO 2 <SP>-</SP> or amine) contained in an aqueous solution is rendered innocuous in an electrolytic cell having between an anode and a cathode an aggregate of discrete packing elements at least some of which are non-metallic electrically conductive elements (e.g. of carbon). In the process, the polluting substance is reacted either with a compound which is dissolved in the solution or with electrolytic reaction products of the compound. Innocuous reaction products are evolved at one electrode. Any noxious reaction products evolved at the counter electrode are prevented (e.g. by a permeable wall) from entering the main body of the electrolyte. Gas is generated in the main body of the electrolyte and effects cleaning of the surfaces of the electrically conductive elements. Specified polluting substances together with dissolved compounds (indicated in brackets) which are used for reaction therewith are CN<SP>-</SP>(NaCl); CrO 3 (FeSO 4 ); NaNO 2 (NaCl); and amine, such as methylethyl-, or isopropyl-hydroxylamine, (alkali metal chloride) As shown, metal strip 10 passes through a treatment tank A (e.g. a cyanide, chromic acid or nitrous salt conditioning bath), wash tank B and water rinsing tank C. Polluted water from the wash tank B passes to electrolytic cell D, is purified, passes to a settling tank E and is pumped back to the wash tank B. The electrolytic cell contains working electrodes 26 (e.g. of graphite), counter electrodes 25 (e.g. of graphite) isolated by porous walls 27, non-metallic conductive elements 30 (e.g. of carbon), and non-conductive elements 31 (e.g. of resin, ceramic or glass). The porous walls may be permselective or neutral, e.g. of sulphonated styrene, ceramic, plastics or cellulose acetate.
