1,161,932. Stabilizing lactide or lactone polyesters. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 23 May, 1967 [25 May, 1966], No. 23915/67. Heading C3R. Polymers obtained by the polymerization of cyclic esters of hydroxycarboxylic acids are stabilized by adding (a) a substituted urea or thiourea of formula where X is oxygen or sulphur, R 5 is a hydrocarbon group or R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen atoms or hydrocarbon groups at least one being a hydrocarbon group; (b) a selenium or tellurium dithiocarbamate of formula where Me is selenium or tellurium, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are hydrocarbon atoms containing up to 10 carbon atoms which may be linked together to form a ring and n represents the valency of the selenium or tellurium atom (preferably 4); (c) a substituted guanidine of formula where all of the R's are phenyl or ortho-tolyl radicals provided that up to 4 of the R's may be hydrogen atoms; or an organic acid salt of such a guanidine; or (d) an arylguanidine of formula where the R's are hydrogen atoms or hydrocarbon radicals, provided that 1 or 2 R's may be nitro groups. As additional stabilizers there may be used (e) phenyl-#-naphthylamine; (f) a sterically hindered phenol; (g) a tetraalkylthiuram disulphide; (h) dilauryl-#-thiodipropionate; or (i) tri-(nonylphenyl) phosphite. The polyesters to be stabilized are those derived from the polymerization of monomers of formula where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are hydrogen atoms or substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon groups, or, in some cases other atoms (e.g. halogen) or groups (e.g. alkoxy or aryloxy). Examples describe the stabilization of poly- (pivalolactone).
