Abstract
1,161,953. Surface modified cellulose ethers and compositions containing them. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 20 Oct., 1967, No. 47914/67. Headings C3A and C3F. A water-soluble particulate cellulose ether which has been subjected to an aldehydic surface treatment contains a basic pH buffering agent which is an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a weak protonic acid in a sufficient quantity to maintain an aqueous solution of the ether at pH 7.5-9.5. Methyl, hydroxyethyl and hydroxypropyl celluloses are specified which have been glyoxal treated. The pH buffer may be sodium tetraborate or a salt of carbonic, phosphoric, acetic or citric acid. The surface treatment may be effected by spraying the ether with glyoxal dispersed in a surfactant polyoxyalkylene glycol ether.
