[Also in Division C5] An antimicrobial composition comiprises an aromatic ring halogenated antimicrobial agent selected from a halogenated salicylanilide, a halogenated carbanilide, a halogenated thiocarbanilide, and mixtures thereof, and a solubilising agent therefor selected from a 1-hydroxyethyl-2-C 7-21 alkyl or atkenyKmidazoline, a 2-C 7-21 alkyl or alkenyl-l-(ethyl #-oxypropanoic acid) imidazoline, an amphoteric imidazoline derivative of the formula: wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a C 7-21 alkyl or alkenyl radical, R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrogen or alkali metal atom or CH 2 COOM, wherein M is a hydrogen or alkali metal atom, and G is a hydroxyl radical or an anion derived from an acid salt, an anionic surface active sulphate, or an anionic surface active sulphonate, and mixtures thereof. Other solubilising agents which may also be present are quaternary ammonium compounds of the formula: wherein R, is an alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxyl substituted alkyl or alkenyl, halogen substituted alkyl or alkenyl, alkoxy alkyl, alkoxyalkenyl, alkenoxyalkyl, alkenoxyalkenyl, alkaralkyloxyalkyl, aralkyloxyalkyl, alkaralkyloxyalkenyl, or aralkyloxyalkenyl radical where each alkyl or alkenyl radical or moiety contains at least 7 carbon atoms, R 2 is a C 1-4 alkyl or alkyl radical having at least 8 carbon atoms, a C 1-4 alkenyl or alkenyl radical having at least 8 carbon atoms or a ring-substituted aralkyl radical, R 3 and R 4 are C 1-4 alkyl radicals, and X- is a monovalent anion, and quaternary pyridinium compounds wherein a C 7-21 alkyl radical is attached to the the pyridinium nitrogen atom and the heterocyclic ring may optionally contain an alkyl substituent. Typical examples describe the use of some of the antimicrobial compositions in shampoo and fabric softener formulations together with conventional ingredients thereof. The antimicrobial activity of the compositions may be increased by the addition thereto of lauryl diethylene triamine, lauroylamide diethylene diamine, stearyl triethylene tetramine, dimethylamino propyl ,lauramide, or dimethylamine propyl stearamide. The solubilising agents are also effective when used to solubilise water-insoluble metal salts of 2-pyridinethiol-1-oxide e.g. the Zn salt thereof.
