Abstract

1,161,260. Preserving timber by electrolytic impregnation. C. L. MARRIOTT, C. H. MARRIOTT and H. P. MacPHERSON. 5 Dec., 1967, No. 55348/67. Heading A5E. [Also in Division C7] Timber is preserved by introducing preservative or fungicidal material into fresh timber by inserting one end into a vessel containing a solution in dilute sulphuric acid of the preservative or fungicidal material so as to contact an electrode in contact with the solution, applying a second electrode to the other end of the timber, and passing D.C. through it, whereby ions of the preserving material are introduced into the sap of the timber. The preserving material may comprise copper sulphate or arsenic pentoxide. Typically a felled tree trunk is placed vertically on an electrode submerged in a trough containing the treating solution and a second electrode is placed on the top end. By periodically reversing the applied polarity both anions and cations may be introduced into the sap. Alternatively the tree may be placed horizontally on skids or rails and a hemispherical treating solution container, itself serving as an electrode, may be clamped to each end. In a further arrangement sawn timber is immersed between top and bottom electrode in a vat containing treating solution. In all cases a high voltage is applied initially but as the conductivity of the tree sap increases the applied voltage is reduced. The applied voltage may be in the range of 1 to 1000 volts and the current may be in the range 0.001 to 100 amps.
