Abstract

1469750 Treating timber FOSROC AG 11 April 1974 [26 April 1973] 19999/73 Heading D1P Timber consisting wholly or partly of heartwood is impregnated with a preservative in an organic solvent, e.g. tri-n-butyl tin oxide in white spirit, by (1) subjecting the timber to a first vacuum of 200-700 mm Hg for 10 to 150 minutes, (2) forcing preservative into the timber under a positive pressure of 300-1500 mm Hg for 15-150 minutes, and then (3) applying a second vacuum, e.g. 635-685 mm Hg for up to 60 minutes, to extract any excess preservative from the timber. 90% of the total length of the timber is thus impregnated to a depth of 3 mm from any free edge. Redwood, whitewood, larch, Canada spruce, sitka spruce, oak, hemlock and Maranti may be treated.
