Abstract

1,161,259. Plastics pipes. RAYCHEM CORP. 31 Oct., 1967 [31 Oct., 1966], No. 49492/67. Heading F2P. [Also in Division C3] Heat-recoverable pipes having elastic memory properties are prepared by subjecting pipes made of polymeric materials to a dosage of radiation sufficient to cross-link the polymeric material in one surface portion of the pipe to an extent which renders it infusible, but insufficient to render an opposite surface portion of the pipe infusible. Specified polymers are polyolefins, polyvinyl halides, polyvinylidene halides, ethylene/vinyl acetate and ethylene/ethyl acrylate copolymers, and polyamides. Elastic memory properties may be imparted by deforming, e.g. expanding, the tube at elevated temperature and cooling in the deformed state. Examples describe the differential irradiation of (1-3) polyethylene and (4-6) plasticized polyvinyl chloride tubing.
