Abstract
1,157,898. Tempered glass. FORD MOTOR CO. 24 Nov., 1966 [7 Dec., 1965], No. 52565/66. Heading C1M. A method of making a tempered glass article for use as an automobile windshield in which the article is subjected to both thermal tempering, and chemical tempering, and in which the chemical tempering may be effected after the article has been subjected to thermal tempering, said chemical tempering being accomplished by means of an ion-exchange process at a temerature below the strain point of the glass, or where the article is subjected to chemical tempering by means of an ion exchange and/or surface nucleation process at a temperature above the strain point of the glass before the article is subjected to thermal tempering, thermal tempering is effected by heating the glass and then rapidly cooling. Selected regions only of the article are thermally tempered so as to leave only partially thermally tempered regions or thermally untempered regions.
