Abstract
1,154,674. Forging; making synchronizer rings. TOKAI RIKA DENKI SEISAKUSHO K.K. 9 Jan., 1968 [25 Jan., 1967 (2)], No. 1225/68. Headings B3A and B3H. A composite workpiece consisting of an inner ring (23) of higher ductility than a closely fitting outer ring (22), Fig. 3 (not shown), is forged in a die 5 having spaced recesses 9 in its inner surface, by means of a punch 17 which enters the inner ring and compresses the workpiece whereby the material of the outer ring flows into the recesses and the material of the inner ring flows into the resulting depressions 33, Fig. 4, of the outer ring. The invention is of particular use in forging synchronizing rings for gear-boxes when the inner ring is of soft steel and the outer ring of cobalt bronze. During hot forging, the composite workpiece is compressed axially by the surface 20 whilst the punch portion 19 causes radial flow of the outer ring into toothed recesses 9 thus forming teeth 35, Fig. 4. Depressions 33 resulting from this flow are filled by flow of the inner ring whereby the two parts are locked together mechanically and by fusion. An ejector 11 removes the workpiece from the die. In another embodiment, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), applied to cold forging, the outer ring is of aluminium alloy and the inner ring of a polycarbonate resin.
