Abstract
999,228. Upsetting. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 17, 1963 [Dec. 19, 1962], No. 49738/63. Heading B3H. A method of forming an article by compression in a die cavity 26 comprises first filling the cavity with a material 28 of one compressive strength and then pressing a workpiece 20 of higher compressive strength into the cavity to displace the first material 28 therefrom, Fig. 3, and form the article 20a. The latter may be of beryllium, tungsten, columbium, molybdenum, nickel base super alloys or cast iron and the back pressure produced by the material 28 is stated to prevent surface cracking of the article which is preferably formed by cold upsetting. Material 28 may be lead copper, zinc or other ductile material pressed into the die cavity through opening 22. During upsetting of the workpiece 20 the material 28 is expelled through ports 30 which may be controlled by valves V, Fig. 6 (not shown). In another embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the opening 22 also extends through the lower die and pressure is applied simultaneously to both ends of the workpiece. In another embodiment, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), the ports 30 are omitted and during upsetting the dies become separated slightly against the closing force 34 to allow escape of the material 28. In a further embodiment, Figs. 9-11 (not shown), a ring-shaped workpiece is upset both inwardly and outwardly in the die cavity by pressure applied to one or both ends of the workpiece. Reference is made to the forming of turbine blades and wheels.
