Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A method of seaming end closures 28, 29 on a metallic container 30 comprises rolling a flange 42 on the closure round a flange 43 on the container, and then rolling the flanges together to form a seam having seven thicknesses of material, Fig. 6. The cylindrical, square &c. container may be of metal or of a mixture of metal and plastics in which metal is the predominant constituent. Apparatus for forming the seams comprises mandrels 26, 27 for rotating the container, and carriages 32, 33 supporting crossslides 34, 35 for seaming rollers 36, 37. The first stage of the seaming operation (Figs. 8-10) is performed by the rollers 36 and the second stage by rollers 37, after which the seams may be flattened (Fig. 15) by rollers 38. If the seams are not flattened, or in addition to flattening, a polymerized liquid sealant may be injected into the seams by nozzles 41. The rollers 36, 37 may be replaced by a composite roller.
