Abstract

1,153,682. Tow drawing synthetic filaments MONSANTO CO. 12 Sept., 1966 [20 Sept., 1965 (2)], No. 40717/66. Heading B5B. In a process for uniformly orientating synthetic filaments in the form of heavy tows, the tow, 10, may be preheated to a temperature of 50-100‹ C. and moisturized to a moisture level of 3-30% by weight, by passing through a preconditioning chamber 14, from when it is withdrawn by a feed roll assembly 22, the rolls preferably being maintained near the temperature of the tow, and passed into a dielectric oven, 24, consisting of an electrode assembly enclosed within a housing 34, the interior surface of which is provided with a metallic sheathing, 38, where it is heated uniformly, before engaging a draw roll assembly 26, and thence through a suitable guide to other processing or a take up roll, 32. The dielectric field is characterized by a frequency of from 1-1200 megacycles per second and a voltage of 2000- 25,000 volts, and may be established so as to provide an increasing field intensity as the yarn moisture decreases during heating, such as by decreasing the distance between the electrodes at the draw roll end of the oven. To avoid arcing across the electrodes when the yarn contains a lot of moisture, the space surrounding the dielectric field may be swept with dry air or gas. Other moisturizing agents such as alcohols or glycols may be used. The treatment of polyester and polyamide filamentary materials is exemplified.
