Abstract
1,151,920. Composite films. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 31 Oct., 1966 [1 Nov., 1965], No. 4874/66. Heading B5B. Composite multilayer films comprising a synthetic thermoplastic polymer unstable to heat encapsulated in a heat stable synthetic thermoplastic polymer are produced by feeding the heat stable polymer from an extruder 11 through a conduit 12 to a sheeting die 13, the conduit being in operative communication with a second conduit 23 which supplies the material which is unstable to heat from an extruder 22 so that a composite coaxial stream of material is formed prior to entering the cavity of the die and extruding the composite film from the slot 17, heat being applied to the heat stable material at the point of discharge from the die, by means 19 and 20. Vinylidene chloride, or a copolymer containing at least 50% thereof with vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, ethylacrylate or methylmethacrylate may be used as the encapsulated layer, and a polyolefin vinyl chloride, polystyrene or cellulose ester may be used for the outer layers.
