Abstract
1,151,188. Polymerization/hair-treating processes. CLAIROL Inc. 12 Aug., 1966 [27 Sept., 1965], No. 36286/66. Heading C3P. [Also in Division D1] A process for colouring or bleaching, and additionally protecting, hair comprises treating hair with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble vinylic monomer having an acid group or a salt derivative thereof and effecting polymerization of the monomer in situ in the presence of a bridging agent capable of bridging polymer chains formed from the monomer, an oxidizing agent and, optionally, an oxidation or non- oxidation type dye. The polymerization and colouring (or bleaching) can be effected simultaneously or sequentially. The oxidizing agent can serve both as polymerization initiator and either as bleaching agent or developer of the oxidation dye. Suitable vinylic monomers include acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid and sodium, potassium, calcium and monoethanolamine salts thereof. As bridging agent there may be used a water-soluble compound of a Group II or III metal, e.g. CaCl 2 , ZnC1 2 , BaCl 2 and Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , a difunctional quaternary ammonium compound, or a compound providing an organic monovalent cation, e.g. cetyl pyridinium chloride, cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and stearyl amine hydrochloride. Oxidizing agents specified are H 2 O 2 , ammonium, sodium or potassium persulphate, and combinations of H 2 O 2 with these persulphates To facilitate penetration, a swelling agent may additionally be used, e.g. monoethanolamine, NaOH, KOH, NH 3 or Ca(OH) 2 .
