Abstract
1,150,121. Detonating and fuse cords. ENSIGN-BICKFORD CO. 29 Nov., 1966 [3 Dec., 1965; 7 March, 1966], No. 53315/66. Heading F3A. Elongated detonating fuse or fuse cord comprises a core of particulate high explosive material and a covering circumscribing the core, the core having a core load less than the critical core load necessary for initiating explosion or propagating an explosive signal, or, a core load which is slightly above the critical level and thereby lacking in sensitivity or explosive strength. The cord is rendered fully active by decreasing the particle size of the explosive material whilst maintaining a constant core load. To make the cord, coarse granules 32 of an explosive such as PETN, RDX, HMX, TNT or tetryl are treated with anti-static wetting agents such as saturated, long chain or fatty alcohol sulphates and fed with a centre thread 36 into a hopper 34. The explosive core 40 so formed is wrapped with paper tape 42 and bound with yarn 58. A coating of plastics material is then applied and the cord passed between rollers to crush the coarse granules of explosive before finally coating the cord with wax or wrapping it in a layer of textiles.
