Abstract
1,150,172. Diaphragm fuel injection pump; sparking plugs; fuel injectors. PHYSICS INTERNATIONAL CO. Sept. 1, 1966 [Sept. 1, 1965], No.39174/66. Headings F1A and F1B. [Also in Division H2] A Piezo-electric liquid pump, e.g. for I. C. engine fuel injection, comprises a Piezo-electric pumping element 30 and inlet and outlet valves 42 and 54, positioned at one end of the pumping element, through which liquid flows to and from a liquid chamber 46. Fuel is supplied under pressure by a feed pump through a porous metal or ceramic filter 34 and the annular chamber 36, defined between the housing 24 and a rubber sleeve 32, to the pumping chamber below the plunger 38. The plunger 38 is bonded to a polyurethane seal 44 which is bonded to the housing 24. The housing portion 26 is threaded for insertion into the cylinder head of an I. C. engine. The pumping element may be operated to give a number of separate injections into an engine cylinder for each cycle of operation and the voltage pulses producing expansion of the discs of the pumping element 30 may produce ultrasonic vibrations in the steam of fuel injected. The outlet valve housing 52 is mounted in an insulator 48 and the tips 52A thereof are spaced from the tips 26A of the housing portion 26 to form a spark gap. Power to operate the pumping element 30 and to provide sparks between the tips 52A and 28 is supplied through leads 17 and 20, respectively, connected to distributers (18 and 22, Fig. 1, not shown). In a further embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), a cylinder of Piezo-electric material (62) is expanded and contracted in a housing (60). A pumping chamber (70) is defined between the cylinder (62) and a central core (68) and fuel is delivered therefrom, by contraction of the cylinder, through an injector (102). The injector contains a valve (118, Fig. 4), which comprises a bullet shaped valve member (126) urged on to its seat by a spring (128) and the pressure of the fuel supplied to the pumping chamber (70) by a feed pump. Fuel is sprayed from radially directed openings (104) in the bullet shaped injector housing (102). In another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), a rotary distributer (148) is provided to connect the pumping chamber (70) to a plurality of outlets (162) for connection to respective engine cylinders.
