Abstract

1,148,653. Thermocouples. JAMES HOWDEN & CO. Ltd. 22 July, 1966 [18 Aug., 1965], No. 35486/65. Heading H1K. To increase the surface area without increasing the cross-sectional area of a thermo-electric junction between two conductors, and thereby improve its rate of response without sacrifice of mechanical strength, the adjacent ends are thinned and laterally spread, e.g. into a flat circular or square disc of a lateral extent of “ inch and a thickness of 0À014 inch in the case where the conductors are <SP>1</SP>/ 16 inch diameter wires. In the drawings (not shown), Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 4 depict respectively the circular and square disc forms of such a couple; and Figs. 5 and 6 depict differential thermocouples comprising a quick response thermocouple according to the invention connected in series opposition with a conventional relatively slow response couple. In the Fig. 6 form the device has three terminals -one on the side of each junction remote from the other and one between them-so that either couple may be used alone or both together as a differential couple. In both the Fig. 5 and Fig. 6 forms the slow response couple may be slugged (by thickening the junction or surrounding it with insulant) to make its response even slower.
