Abstract

1,088,764. Anisotropic thermoelectric element. INSTITUTE POLUPROVODINKOV AN U.S.S.R. Oct. 3, 1964, No. 27595/64. Heading H1K. A thermoelectric element comprises a slab having plane end faces disposed at not more than 60 degrees to one another and with parallel side faces cut from a single crystal having anisotropic thermo-electric properties in such a manner that the principal thermoelectric axis lies in a plane perpendicular to the side and the end faces and makes an angle of 45 degrees with the side faces at a point midway between the end faces. Eight single-crystal segments 1 to 8 are joined together to form a thermoelectric generator working at a temperature difference T 0 -T 1 , with the voltage being extracted between segments 1 and 8. The principal thermoelectric axes makes an angle # = 45 degrees with central radial line of each segment. A single element may be used to produce a voltage (Figure 1, not shown) or combined with right angled segments or made in the form of a helix to give a generator (Figues 3 and 4, respectively, not shown). The segments may be made of bismuth or its alloys.
