Abstract

1,148,267. Resilient mountings. BARRY WRIGHT CORP. 18 Jan., 1967, No. 2595/67. Heading F2S. A shock-absorbing and vibration-isolating unit comprises a base member 10 with a central opening 12 within which is sprung, under radial precompression, a split cylindrical spring 16, an upper load-bearing member consisting, e.g. of a cap 17, and a downwardly projecting member 18 with a washer 21 secured to its base, and a resilient system comprising e.g. a spring 26 which is interposed between the cap 17 and the base 10. As shown the spring 26 is of relatively low spring rate for isolating continuous vibrations, a pair of rubber cushion members 24, 25, which extend from opposite sides of the upper horizontal portion 13 of the base member 10, being of a relatively high spring rate in order to damp short-period shocks respectively in the upward and downward movement of the load-bearing member after a predetermined amount of compression of the spring 26. The cap 17 is urged downward upon the upper end of the split spring 16 by means of a spring 23 which is constrained between the cap 17 and the washer 21, lateral movements between the load-bearing member 17 and the base 10 being damped by the friction between the upper end of the cyindrical spring 23 and the cap member 17. A mounting bolt 20 is screwed into the member 18. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the springs 23, 26 are omitted. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the rubber springs 24, 25 are replaced by a pair of conical springs (26a, 26b) intended mainly for vibration isolation. In an alternative construction, Fig. 5 (not shown), the upper plate (13) of the base member (10) is carried by a rubber cylindrical member (10a) and has a cushion (36) on its upper face, a conical vibration isolating spring (26a) is located between the plate (13) and the cap member (17), the helical spring 23 is replaced by a cylindrical rubber spring (31), and the split spring (16) is provided with a cover (16a) which is slidable within the opening (12). Rebound damping occurs when the washer (30) engages the plate (13) and the member (10a) is placed in tension.
