Abstract

1,146,205. Tunnels, TUBE HEADINGS Ltd. 1 May, 1967 [5 May, 1966], No. 19966/66. Heading E1F. Sections are forced horizontally through ground to form a support structure comprising at least two enclosed passages which are one above the other. The wall formed by the sections may reinforce the ground or an embankment above the ground. A tunnel is formed below ground or .through a railway embankment by forming a first underground wall by forcing sections 2, 5 through the embankment, the sections being formed by a number of lengths, and the earth from the leading length being excavated as it is forced. The sections may be pushed or pulled and each leading length may be preceded by a boring machine which loosens the earth. After the first wall has been reinforced and grouted to the extent shown a second wall with the section 2 projecting to the left is constructed horizontal spaced from the first wall by the width of the tunnel. The ground is excavated to permit the placement of beams 20 which rest on neoprene pads 22 on the walls. The beams are floated with concrete, the upper sections 5 are filled with concrete and the ground is replaced. The tunnel interior is excavated, a roadway formed by reinforced slabs 26 and pavements 29 fitted. The tunnel has channels 19, 28 for services and drainage. Side by side tunnels may be formed by first erecting three walls. The sections 5 may be of inverted U cross section.
