[Also in Division C3] Novel fluoranthyl ketones of formula (I), where R 1 is H, alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or halogen, R 2 is H, OH, O-alkyl, O- alkenyl, O-cycloalkyl, O-aryl, O-aralkyl or halogen, R 3 is H, halogen, OH, alkyl, alkenyl, O-alkyl, O-alkenyl or O-aralkyl, R 0 is an aromatic or heterocyclic radical, each of n, u and v is 0 or 1, with the proviso that u + v must be at least 1, m is 0, 1 or 2 and p is 0, 1, 2 or 3, with the proviso that at least one of R 2 and R 3 must be OH, O-alkyl, O-alkenyl, O-cycloalkyl or O- aralkyl are prepared by reacting a compound of Formula (II) with Y-R 0 (R 3 )p, where X is H and Y is -CO halogen, or vice versa. The products are used as U.V. absorbers in polymeric materials. m-Cresotic acid chloride is prepared by reacting thionyl chloride with w-cresotic acid methyl ether.
