Abstract
1,144,498. Desulphurization of aromatic hydrocarbons. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 29 Sept., 1966 [4 Oct., 1965], No. 41941/65. Heading C5E. Aromatic hydrocarbon feedstocks are desulphurized without appreciable hydrogenation by passing the feedstock in the liquid or vapour phase over supported nickel in the presence of hydrogen at a temperature and pressure such that the sulphur combines with the Ni but no free H 2 S is formed, said Ni having been presulphided in the absence of hydrogenatable material to a S : Ni atomic ratio such that the Ni has no aromatic hydrogenating activity at the temperature and pressure used for the desulphurization. The preferred S : Ni ratio is from 0À1 : 1 to 0À2 : 1. The feedstock may be benzene containing 1-50 p.p.m. wt. sulphur. The nickel may be supported on the refractory oxides of Group II to V elements or on kieselguhr, pumice or preferably sepiolite. Nickel may be presulphided by using compounds, such as thiophenes, thiacyclo-alkanes having at least 4 carbon atoms in the ring and dialkyl monosulphides, which sulphide the Ni at temperatures below 392‹ F. only to a limited extent even if used in excess. Benzene desulphurized by this process may be hydrogenated to cyclohexane.
