Abstract
1,143,182. Extrusion pelletizers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 16 Jan., 1967 [3 Feb., 1966], No. 4804/66. Heading B5A. An under-liquid extrusion pelletizer comprises a die plate 10 separated from a multiorificed face plate 14 by a thermally insulating layer 13, e.g. of asbestos, the material to be pelletized being extruded via conduits 15 which are in thermal contact with die plate 10 and insulated from face plate 14 by asbestos washers 19. The emergent material is cooled by liquid 22 and cut by a series of rotating knives 20 (one shown) to form spherical pellets 23. Die plate 10 is heated by flow of hot fluid, e.g. steam, in ducts 12. Conduits 15, which may be of mild steel, have linings 16 of P.T.F.E., preferably glass fibre reinforced P.T.F.E., nylon or ceramics. Liquid 22 may be water, preferably demineralized or distilled, with possibly the addition of sodium nitrite as a corrosion inhibitor, or may be a glycol-water mixture. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), conduits 15 are integral with die plate 10. Also, face plate 14 may be curved and the path of the material may diminish in crosssection between plates 10 and 14. The apparatus is particularly intended for the pelletization of polypropylene. Other materials mentioned are high and low density polyethylene, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers, poly-4- methyl-pentene-1, polybutene-1, nylon and polyethylene terephthalate.
