Abstract
1,140,882. Cooling towers. H. THUMM. 2 Feb., 1966 [3 Feb., 1965; 8 Oct., 1965], No. 4637/66. Heading F4K. [Also in Division B1] A cross-flow cooling tower includes upright plates 10 furnished with transverse needlelike projections 11, preferably formed integrally with the plates from plastics material. The surfaces of the plates and needles may be roughened to aid wetting. The plates 10 may be assembled in the form of units (Fig. 10) comprising rows of plates edge-to-edge horizontally in tiers comprising rows separated by the projections 11, and a plurality of tiers, with adjacent tiers in staggered relation to one another. The units are held together between end plates (22) by tie bolts (23) passing through tubes (21) preferably of plastics material, which tubes pass through apertures in diagonally opposite corners of the plates. In order to distribute the liquid, each plate is furnished along its upper edge with projecting ledges (14, Fig. 7), the edges of which touch those of adjacent plates when the unit is assembled, the liquid seeping through holes (15, Fig. 8) formed as semicircular recesses in the edge of each ledge (14). A distribution tray (16) of plastics material, furnished with larger apertures (17) is located above the uppermost tier for liquid distribution. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 9) the ledges (18) are shaped so as to obviate the need for a separate distribution tray. The units may be assembled together to form the walls of a four- or five-sided cooling tower, the gas outlet being in the top of the tower, (Figs. 1, 2) or may form two walls of a three-sided cooling tower, the gas outlet being in the third wall (not shown); in either case, fans may be located in the gas outlet to assist draught.
