Abstract

1,140,861. Burners. F. J. WEINBERG. 11 Feb., 1966 [11 Feb., 1965], No. 5924/65. Heading F4T. [Also in Division H5] A fuel burner in which the temperature and degree of ionization of the flame is increased by an arc struck between a pair of electrodes and passing through the flame includes a block 10 of porous brick formed with a central passage 10a of frusto-conical form and an annular duct 12 through which a fuel-oxidant mixture is introduced from an inlet 13, a thoriated tungsten cathode 14 and an annular anode 15. Cathode 14 has a pointed end and is surrounded by a sheath tube, formed by a housing 11, through which tube an inert gas such as argon is passed to protect the cathode from damage by the arc which may be rotated in use by means of an axial magnetic field.
