Abstract

1,114,809. Arc blow-torches. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. 7 April, 1966 [12 April, 1965], No. 15775/66. Heading H5H. [Also in Divisions B7 and F1] A plasma generator in which an arc rotates comprises two conical surfaces defining an annular gap through which gas passes, the size of the gap being adjustable. An arc 7 is struck between an outer cylindrical electrode 1 and the circular rim of an inner central electrode 3. The electrodes extend to conical surfaces 2, 4 defining a gas passage between a gas distribution chamber 9 and an arc chamber 5. The arc is rotated by a magnetic field produced by one or more coils 14 around the electrodes or by a helical gas flow produced by introducing the gas tangentially into chamber 9. Electrode 1 of Cu is insulated by a ceramic, mica or PTFE member 21 from the brass extension 2. Both electrodes are cooled and the central electrode can be moved axially to vary the size of the gas passage. The generator may be used in a jet propulsion unit or a wind tunnel; alternatively the high temperatures may be used for chemical reactions.
