Abstract

1,140,519. Can openers. SUNBEAM CORP. 18 July, 1966 [10 Jan., 1966], No. 32250/66. Heading B8D. [Also in Division B3] A combination appliance having can opening and knife sharpening means comprises a housing 23 enclosing a motor which is drivingly connected to can opening means and has an armature shaft 30 supporting an abrasive wheel 31 within the housing, a V-shaped knife blade guiding slot 38 formed in one wall of the housing, the wheel extending into the slot through an opening in the bottom thereof, and a combined blade guide and cover 40 mounted on the housing for movement with respect to the slot between a first position closing the slot and a second position in which the walls of the cover and the converging walls of the slot define a pair of converging knife blade guiding slots, the planes of which intersect opposite faces of the wheel. The appliance is intended to be used in the horizontal position shown during knife sharpening operations or in a vertical position during can opening operations, the appliance then being supported on a base 21. The housing is in the form of a column 23 containing the motor and a head 24 in which the can opening mechanism is disposed. The can opening mechanism comprises a cutter 26 and feed wheel 27 which are movable into operative engagement with a can by moving a handle 25 through 90 degrees to a position in which a bar 28 is moved to rotate a switch controlling the motor. The shaft 30 of the motor carries the grinding wheel between a nut 32 and spring 33 which provide a friction drive for the wheel. The wheel is located within an enclosure formed by transverse walls 35, 36 and extends into the bottom of the moulded V-shaped slot 38. The cover 40 has an outer position 40f, Fig. 3, conforming to the shape of the housing and an elongated guide 40a for engaging a passage 38d in the bottom of the slot. Projections 40b, 40c having hooks 40d, 40e also extend from the cover and permit movement of the cover from an operative position shown in which the cover is spaced from the housing to provide guide slots for the knife, to an inoperative position in which the cover is retracted into engagement with the housing. The slot is formed with a widened portion providing clearance for the handle of the knife.
