The central section of a three-section mattress for a paralysed patient has an aperture in the lying surface which is occupied by an upholstered member or by a bed pan 5 each being supported by the cover 11 of an air cushion which is deflated for withdrawal of the member or pan through a passageway 10 leading to an edge of the mattress and closed by a flexible flap 6. The mattress sections consist of layers 3 of foam plastics cemented to a support plate 2 which is cemented to a support 4 of criss-crossed strips of foam plastics cemented to each other and to a base plate 1, the cover 11 being secured to the base plate by elastic straps 12 which aid exhaustion of the cushion when a valve is opened. The cushion is re-inflated by e.g. an air pump and an edge 5<SP>1</SP> of the pan, or a plate cemented to the upholstered member, abuts the undersurface of the support plate 2 when in position of use. In a modification, an edgeless bed pan, permanently in situ, is mounted on a carrier plate, which may be flanged and abuts the undersurface of the support plate, and contains cellular material, which may be separated from a lower layer of peat by a screen, the air cushion being secured in position by a band passing to the underside of the base plate. The base and support plates and the support 4 may be formed as a single plastic moulding, and the central section of the mattress may have lateral members extending beneath the other members.
