Abstract

Coatings of different thicknesses and different metals are applied to either side of electrically conducting strip material e.g. Fe by depositing Zn, Cr, Ni or Sb vapour in apparatus comprising a coating chamber 12 (Drawing not shown) and an inlet and outlet housing 14 divided by rotary seals 26, 32, 40 and 50 and wall 48 into vacuum chambers 28, 34 and cleaning and finished product chambers 46, 44. Strip 22 enters housing 14 and is cleaned by passing between parallel anode plates 60 in a low pressure hydrogen gas stream, a voltage of 100-3000 volts being applied between the strip and the plates. The strip emerges into housing 12, is electrically heated to 350-600 DEG F. by applying current to rolls 66, 68 horizontally over coating metal vaporizing boat 76 where one side is coated, round roller 80 and over boat 84 where the other side is coated and leaves through housing 14. To control the coating thicknesses the respective surfaces may be masked or the temperatures and surface areas of the boats varied. The housing may be upright with the strip passing vertically over rollers 68, 72, 80, 88 and 90 and deflector plates over boats 76, 84.
