Abstract
Fatty acid esters of bromomethyl-phenols are prepared by reacting the corresponding esters of acyloxymethyl-phenols (I) into HBr in presence of a liquid fatty acid; the fatty acids and acyloxy groups contain 2-5 carbon atoms. The term "phenol" includes napthols, anthranols and phenanthrols and the phenols may be additionally substituted by halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkythio, arylthio, nitro, formylalkyl, oxoalkyl, carboxyl or carbalkoxyl. Starting materials (I) are produced by reacting a fatty acid anhydride with an amino-methyl-phenol, the latter having been made by condensing a phenol with formaldehyde and a secondary amine (especially morpholine) or with an alkoxymethylamine.
