Abstract

Niobium or niobium base alloys, e.g. Nb-20 Ta15W-5Mo, are coated with a CoAl compound. The coating may include impurities up to 20% by weight of e.g. Fe or W. It may be applied by flame or plasma torch spraying, as a slurry, hot pressure bonding, electrophoretic deposition or a pack cementation process. In an example of electrolytic deposition, an iron strike is formed using an iron formate bath, then a layer of cobalt is formed from a cobalt sulphate and chloride bath, followed by a flash plate in a fused bath of AlCl3 and NaCl, and Al is subsequently deposited using an ether hydride aluminium plating bath. The whole is then heated in argon. A cementation example, niobium or a niobium alloy substrate is cobaltized in a pack (in a steel or graphite container) comprising (per cent by weight) 10 to 40 cobalt, 2 to 12 ammonium chloride, and an inert filler, e.g. Al2O3. The pack is heated in an argon atmosphere at 1400 to 2200 DEG F. The substrate is then embedded in a pack containing 1/2 to 15 aluminium powder or flake, 0.05 to 3 powdered halide salt, and an inert filler, e.g. Al2O3. The pack is then heated in an argon atmosphere at a temperature of 1600 to 2200 DEG F. Alternatively the aluminizing step may be effected without the halide salt.
