A reservoir marking instrument with a felt nib 8 accommodated in the integral neck portion 6 of the barrel/reservoir 1 is provided with an integral cap 9 which is broken open along a line of weakness 10 when the instrument is to be first used. During manufacture, the bottom of the barrel 1 is closed after the introduction of the nib 8 and a plug 2 of absorbent material, such as felt, by means of a lid 4 which is fastened to the bottom of the barrel wall by means of crimping.
