[Also in Division F1 In a pump or motor for a hydrostatic transmission, comprising a relatively rotatable cylinder block and valve plate, recesses 75 to 81 are provided in the cylinder block face and cooperate with recesses in the valve plate face (Fig. 4, not shown), the valve plate recesses being supplied with liquid from the valve plate kidney ports to provide hydraulic balancing, and recesses 75 to 81 beng shaped as shown to reduce the risk of the recesses being brought into communication with each other in the event of scratching of the cylinder block surface. Arcuate leakage grooves are formed in the valve plate surface between the recesses and the kidney ports, the ends of the grooves being connected by straight, relatively narrow channels. A leakage-collecting recess is provided at the centre of the valve plate surface.
