Abstract

1,031,392. Heating granular materials. AEROX Ltd. Oct. 8, 1962 [July 10, 1961], No. 24822/61. Heading F4U. [Also in Divisions A2 and A5] In a method of sterilizing a mineral powder such as talc, or an edible powder such as farina, the powder particles are separated from one another by a gas stream which provides also a sterilizing environment for the particles. In all the methods described, the sterilizing gas is air, and sterilization is effected by heating. In Fig. 1, the powder particles are fluidized and sterilized in a chamber 6 by air which has been previously heated in a heater 5. The air may be recirculated in a line 12 or flow to waste through a filter 2. A supplementary heater (not shown) may be provided in the chamber 6. Temperature measuring points are provided at 8. The floor 3 of the bed is divided into sections in each of which gas flow is regulated, whereby circulation of the powder in the container 1 may be controlled. Other particular methods described are: (a) A fluidized mass of powder particles is sterilized as it flows through a duct 20 containing a heater 22 (Fig. 2, not shown). (b) Powder particles are separated and conveyed on a fluidized conveyer 31 through a sterilizing zone containing a heater 33 or alternatively a heater 34 (Fig. 3, not shown). (c) Powder particles are separated from one another by an air stream which may be preheated. Powder particles and air stream flow in co-current or alternatively in countercurrent over heating coils 41 which maintain the gas at sterilization temperature (Fig. 4, not shown).
