Abstract

1,030,984. Shaft couplings; pipe couplings. C. J. DAVIS. Feb. 2, 1965 [July 22, 1964], No. 4492/65. Headings F2G and F2U. A reversible drill pipe coupling for connecting the ends of adjacent pipe sections of an earth drilling string comprises a hexagonal pin 15 welded to a drill pipe 18, and engaged within a complementary bore of a female box 10 welded to a drill pipe 12, the coupling parts being secured against axial separation by a U-shaped keeper 25 located in transverse holes 23, 24 in the box 10, the legs of the keeper 25 engaging an annular groove in the pin 15. The inner end of the box 10 has a collar 14, or is formed with a reduced diameter (not shown) to provide a shoulder against which the pin 15 is located, the end of the pin 15 having a reduced diameter 19 carrying an " 0 " ring 20 serving to form a pressure-tight seal. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the hexagonal portion of the pin and box are of reduced length, the keeper 25 being arranged towards the outer end of the box 10 to engage the groove in a cylindrical portion of the pin 15.
