Abstract

Aqueous emulsions comprise a film-forming addition polymer, a natural or synthetic water soluble organic colloid containing hydroxyl groups and a zirconium compound which is compatible with the emulsion, is at least partly soluble in water at pH values at which the emulsions are stable, and renders the emulsions thixotropic. The emulsions may be compounded with pigments and other conventional additives to give paints. Specified zirconium compounds are aminolkyl zirconates, e.g. derived from ethanolamine, diethanolamine, triisopropanolamine and 2-amino-2-ethylpropane-1,3-diol, and salts of zirconium with carboxylic acids, hydroxy acids and diketones. Examples describe emulsions comprising titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, kaolin, hydroxyethyl cellulose, naphthalene/formaldehyde condensate, sodium hexametaphosphate, polyvinyl acetate, dibutyl phthalate and (1) triisopropanolamine zirconate together with (2) blue pigment, (7) diacetato-zirconic acid, (8) lactato-zirconic acid, (9) glycolato-zirconic acid, (10) formato-zirconic acid, (11) methoxyacetato-zirconic acid, (12) zirconium tetracetyl acetonate, (13) basic zirconium sulphate and (14) ammonium zirconyl carbonate; (3) titanium dioxide, talc, whiting, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium carboxy-methyl cellulose, vinyl acetate/acrylic acid copolymer and the reaction product of zirconium tetrabutoxide with diethanolamine together with (4) yellow pigment; (5) titanium dioxide, talc, blanc fixe, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, vinyl acetate/isooctyl acrylate copolymer and the reaction product of zirconium tetrabutoxide with 2-amino-2-ethyl-propane-1,3-diol; and (6) vinyl acetate/vinyl caprate copolymer and triisopropanolamine zirconate.
