Abstract

1,029,156. Spring drums. RALEIGH INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 1, 1964 [March 30, 1963], No. 12702/63. Heading B8B. [Also in Division A3] A spring reel for a safety harness comprises an inertia mass acting upon a piston member slidable axially of the reel against spring pressure to effect locking means for the reel at a predetermined acceleration of the vehicle. The strap 22 is wound on a reel 11 rotatable on a sleeve 16a integral with a piston housing 16 and having a retracting spring 12 at each end. The inertia mass 14 lies on interdigitated fingers 13d of two piston members 13a slidable within the sleeve 16a The members are urged together by springs 19 lying in a recess at each end of the piston and contacting the housing 16. Movement of the inertia mass 14 at a predetermined acceleration moves a piston member and displaces balls 15a from a channel in the piston member into recesses in a reel flange 11a locking the reel against movement. The piston members may be rotated by a key 20 to bring the fingers or the like beneath the mass 14. A single piston member may be provided with a linkage operating on opposite ends of the reel and the interdigitated fingers may be replaced by overlapping shelves or platforms.
