Abstract

1,063,513. Brakes. J. B. MANN. April 10, 1964 [Jan. 17, 1963], No. 2117/63. Addition to 918,486. Heading F2E. Brake means for use with a pair of relatively movable members 1, 2, Fig. 1, comprises a tapering gap between opposed surfaces 7, 8 of the members into which is movable a carrier 6. The latter has a single pair of locking elements 3, 4 for frictionally engaging and wedging between the surfaces 7, 8 to lock the members 1, 2 together when the carrier is moved into the tapering gap by means of a handle 10. The member 2 may still move from left to right but is prevented from opposite movement. The carrier is withdrawn from the gap by pulling the handle 10 which causes the elements 3, 4 to pivot to an over-centre position and thus relieve the wedging force. The leaf spring 9 returns the members to the locking position when they are clear of the surfaces 7, 8. In a modification the carrier is moved into a tapering gap transversely to the direction of relative movement between the members 1, 2. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, a hand-brake 23, 24 is locked in position by a carrier 6 having elements 3, 4 which act on surfaces 29, 31 on a fixed member 21 and the handle brake part 23 respectively. The hand-brake is released by depressing the spring-loaded rod 33 which causes bell-crank 34 to pivot and move the carrier 6 downwardly.
