A press brake comprises a press frame' parallel carriers on said frame for supporting a pair of elongated co-operating dies over their entire length, one of the carriers being movable to move a die relative to the other, an elongated thrust element, an inflatable device for developing thrust relatively uniformly along the entire length of the element and an elongated connection connecting said movable carrier to said thrust element substantially along the entire length thereof so that thrust is transmitted directly from the element to the movable carrier continuously between the ends thereof. The press brake comprises a frame F; upper and lower fixed and movable die-supporting carriers 2, 4, a base 10 and a pneumatically inflatable bag 14 supported on a fixed plate 18. The carrier 4 is secured to an elongated web 22 slidable in the frame to a thrust element 16 which is in contact with the diaphragm portion 20 of the bag 14. The diaphragm has an area of contact equal to that of the element 16 and is in contact therewith in its deflated condition. Bottled compressed air may be admitted under the control of a pedal operated valve which upon release during part of the stroke will exhaust the system to allow the carrier to lower under the influence of gravity. The stroke of the web is adjustable by means of blocks 30, Fig. 2 (not shown), attached to adjusting screws 34 on the frame, which engage abutment shoulders 32 on the web. A hand wheel 37 simultaneously adjusts the screw positions. The air pressure is regulated by a manually controlled valve 40. Two or more bags arranged in series or parallel which may be interconnected for simultaneous operation may be used.
