Abstract
Sintered friction material comprising metal fibres such as Fe, Cu, bronze and fillers such as C, SiC, MoS2, SiO2, Al2O3 and optionally metal powders, are produced by mixing the components, compacting and sintering. The material contains 15-75% fibres by volume and the metal powder may be the same as or different from the metal of the fibres e.g. Sn, Pb, Cu, Fe. The fibres are 1/16 "-1" in length and 0.001"-0.005" in diameter. Compaction is effected at 5-25 t.s.i. and sintering at 500 DEG -1200 DEG C. Several examples are given and these include hot pressing. The material may also be sintered on to a steel backing.
