Abstract

1,028,743. Cutting tools. BROWN - McLAREN MANUFACTURING CO. June 6, 1963, No. 22651/63. Heading B3B. A form cutting tool comprises a holder 10 with a shank 14, for securing to a machine tool, and a cutter 12. The cutter is formed by a stack of cutting elements or bits 18, 20, 22, 24 which are identical in shape and interchangeable. The topmost cutting bit effects the cutting action on a workpiece and when resharpening becomes necessary this bit can be removed and the stack moved up so that the second bit may perform the cutting operation. The tool holder has a forwardly extending portion 40 through which a clamping screw 44 extends to clamp the bits against the portion 40. The rear portion of the cutting bits and their clamping block are formed with a dovetail which engages a dovetail slot in the holder 10 which is provided with a detachable side portion 34. The holder 10 may be of one piece construction or be made in two parts 48 and 50, dovetailed together, the adjacent faces of the two parts including the dovetail being arcuately curved on a radius extending from the outermost part of the cutter cutting edge. This two-part holder construction facilitates angular adjustment to vary the angle of rake of the cutter 12, without effecting the setting of the cutting edge of the tool. The adjustment may be effected by an adjusting screw 64 located on the holder part 50 in co-operation with a lever 60 on part 48, the lever being movable in relation to a fixed scale 70.
