Abstract

1,028,661. Making metal encased refractory bricks; jointing by stamping. JOHN G. STEIN & CO. Ltd. July 6, 1962 [April 6, 1961], No. 12356/61. Headings B3A and B3Q. [Also in Division F4] A method of making a basic refractory brick comprises applying two metallic plates of channel section to a brick such that the plates embrace the brick with the webs of the plates abutting two opposed faces of the brick and indenting the flanges of the plates to produce indentations which penetrate and key the flanges to the brick. The brick 1 with a pair of channel-section plates 2 of an oxidizable metal and having equal lengths is assembled in a machine 7 comprising a fixed platen 8, an hydraulically or pneumatically operated platen 9, a pair of clamping plates 11, 11<SP>1</SP> and a pair of hydraulically or pneumatically operated indenting dies 16. The clamping plates are pivotally mounted on horizontal axes 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, to blocks 13 slidable on guides 14. The plate 11<SP>1</SP> is set in a horizontal plane and a brick and plate assembly passed from a conveyer on to the platen 8 and against the vertically disposed plate 11, the plate 11<SP>1</SP> is then raised to the vertical position to clamp the brick across its un-cased end faces. The platen 9 is lowered to clamp the plates 2 about the refractory material and the indenting tools advanced to indent the flange portions of the metal plates into the surfaces of the brick. The dies 16 are mounted on rams 15 which are mounted on members 18 adjustable by way of a lead-screw (not shown) towards and away from the brick. After indenting, the platen 9 is withdrawn, the plate 11 pivoted into a horizontal position and the assembled brick ejected on to a conveyor by an ejector 19<SP>1</SP> pivotally mounted to the platen 9. The ejector subsequently returns to its rest position and the plates 11 are rotated into their loading positions to restart the cycle. The edge faces 6 of the flanges may abut one another or be spaced apart substantially parallel to each other. The machine may be arranged to operate automatically. For the manufacture of longitudinally tapered bricks one or both of the clamping plates 11 may be arranged to pivot about vertical axes.
