Abstract

Impregnating apparatus comprises a bath 1 through which a non-woven fibrous web 11 passes on a perforated conveyer belt 3, and a pair of squeeze rollers 14, 15, the lower roller 14 being perforated and the upper roller 15 being urged against the lower, Fig. 1 (not shown). The apparatus may be in two sections i.e. a bath section and a mangling section, each section being provided with a perforated conveyer belt for transporting the web. The lower roller 14 is preferably rubber covered with equi-spaced rows of longitudinal slots around its periphery, slots in adjacent rows being staggered with respect to one another, Fig. 4 (not shown); the roller 14 may also be provided with an internal hollow baffle 26 having a peripheral slot 27 whereby excess impregnant may be drawn from the web by means of fans situated at the ends of the roller. The upper roller 15 is preferably formed of solid elastomeric material e.g. natural or synthetic rubber, and may be urged against the roller 14 by a third roller 16 under the action of hydraulic rams 17 through small rollers 18, Fig. 3 (not shown). A take-off roller 28, of adjustable height, is situated behind the mangling section. The speed of rotation of the rollers 14, 15 may be varied relative to the speed of the bath section conveyer belt 3.
