Abstract

A turntable, on which a cable is being coiled, carries out a traversing motion in its own plane to permit the cable turns to be correctly positioned side-by-side on the table, the velocity of rotation of the table being continually controlled through stepless gearing to ensure that its linear velocity at the point at which the cable is being fed on to the table is equal to the delivery speed of the cable. The cable may be supplied to the table via a part-looped-shaped arm to bend the cable to the mean coiling diameter. The arm may carry a cable delivering roller at its free end and be pivoted at its other end so that when one layer of cable has been laid on the table the arm can swing upwardly to commence the laying of the next layer, the linear movement of the table in the direction of the axis of the delivery roller being then reversed. The arm may be in the form of a tube and a pressing roll 75, Fig. 6 (not shown) may force the cable against two driven rollers 58 so as to bend the cable 1 round to the mean coiling diameter before it is passed into the tube. This is stated to decrease the friction of the cable in the guide tube and to maintain a more accurate shape of the spirals coiled on the turntable.
