Abstract

1,025,486. Packaging-machines. IVERSLEE CO. April 1, 1963, No. 12772/63. Heading B8C. In a machine for making packages by forming recesses in two strips of ductile material, bringing corresponding recesses together to form compartments and sealing the strips over an area partially surrounding each compartment, the non-adherent areas of the strips are spread apart and a filling opening formed in each compartment. Strips 1 and 2 of material e.g. thermoplastically coated aluminium are fed intermittently from rolls C via lubricating brushes H to die mechanisms E where recesses 6 are formed therein by reciprocating heads K. The recessed strips are then fed to heated sealing rolls F, rotated intermittently by a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism and held in yielding contact by springs pressing against their bearings, where they are sealed together over the zones shown shaded in Fig. 3 to produce partially closed compartments. The non- adherent areas are spread apart at their edges by a chisel-shaped spreader 39, and the compartments have filling openings formed therein by an oscillating forming pin 44, connected to operate in timed relation with the rolls F. A filling nozzle is inserted via the filling opening into each compartment, and when this has been filled the nozzle is withdrawn and the spreadapart edges of the strips pass between crimping jaws to seal them together and so close the compartment. To facilitate opening of the closed compartments notches and slots may be formed in the strips between them, and an edge of one strip may overlap the corresponding edge of the other.
