Abstract

Chloroprene is prepared by introducing pure gaseous monovinylacetylene and gaseous hydrogen chloride into an aqueous-acid cuprous chloride catalyst containing 8-20% by weight cuprous chloride and 10-35% by weight hydrogen chloride, the molar ratio HCl: CuCl in the catalyst being from 4.3: 1 to 6: 1, and separating the resulting reaction products by distillation. Examples are given. Comparative examples employ ratios outside the range specified above. By-products obtained are 1-chlorobuta-1,3-diene, 1,3-dichlorobut-2-ene and methyl vinyl ketone.ALSO:A catalyst for the production of chloroprene from monovinylacetylene and hydrogen chloride (see Division C2) comprises an aqueous-acid cuprous chloride catalyst containing 8-20% by weight cuprous chloride and 10-35% by weight hydrogen chloride, the molar ratio of hydrogen chloride to cuprous chloride (calculated as CuCl) being in the range of from 4,3 : 1 to 6 : 1. Examples are given. Comparative examples describe catalysts of the above type in which the ratio of HCl to CuCl is from 2,25 : 1 to 4,3 : 1.
