Abstract

Hydrocarbon vacuum distillates, having an atmospheric boiling point above 150 DEG C. and containing at least two types selected from paraffins, naphthenes and aromatics, are redistilled at a pressure higher than that of the orignal distillation but not above atmospheric pressure whereby paraffins boil lower than naphthanes and naphthanes lower than aromatics which at the original distillation pressure had similar boiling points and a lower boiling fraction enriched in paraffins is recovered. The feedstock may be dehydrogenated to convert naphthenes to aromatics if desired and after separation can be rehydrogenated. Lubricating oils can be divided into fractions of differing characteristics and blended as required and in the case of gas oils the residues have higher specific gravity and lower pour point, cloud point and wax content.
